Fall is here and we LOVE pumpkins!

One of the greatest things about fall (besides the cooler weather) is all the fun decorating options! We LOVE pumpkins. Pumpkins can be used in so many ways in order to bring the cozy fall look to your home.

Pumpkins are not just for carving Jack O' Lanterns at Halloween. Try painting your pumpkins with your favorite fall colors....consider patterns such as plaid, stripes and paisleys. These pumpkins will add a whimsical element to any Halloween/Fall party.

For something a little different, try the white pumpkins! They are beautiful and stand out amongst the crowd. You can carve or paint your initials for an elegant fall center piece. Additionally you can get some small ones and use them as place cards for a party.

Check out this entry way! It has just a hint of spookiness, but done very tastefully. In this design they stacked pumpkins and combined carving and painting to create a unique Halloween scene! It's also a great idea to combine the orange and white pumpkins!

For a fancier look, this is a great idea for a center piece or decoration on a serving table. You can create either an elegant look or make it casual depending on the flowers you decide to use.

ASID 2010-2011 Awards Gala

The designers at By Design Interiors are all members of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers is dedicated to promoting design excellence, serving its members and the public, demonstrating the value of the profession, and strengthening the partnership with industry and related professions.

Each year they hold an awards gala - this year over 200 entries were submitted by Designers, Students and Industry Partners.

This past Saturday several of our designers and staff attended the award gala to recognize some of the design industries best work.

By Design Interiors, Inc. received the "Honorable Mention" award for Commercial Design under 7,000 square feet by Designer, Cindy Aplanalp.

"A local natural energy business wanted a powerful yet comfortable workspace for their newly formed company and driven employees."

"The highlight of the entire space is the exposed reception and conference room; the two spaces separated by glass walls host a stunning collection of furnishings and art. The stone covered walls and custom wood cabinetry combined with the techy glass conference table remind us that nature and technology go hand-in-hand."

ADDITIONALLY, one of our newest design assistants, Tara McGuffin won the Student Residential Category.

GHBA Networking Event

At By Design Interiors we have the privilege of networking with some of the finest builders, remodelers and associates in the design/build industry. The Greater Houston Business Association is the 3rd largest home builders association in the nation and consists of over 2,000 members dedicated to excellence in the design/build industry. Not only are they experts in the industry, they sure know how to have a lot of fun. Every month a different associate member hosts a networking event for the Remodelors Council. August was By Design Interiors opportunity to host this event - and we had a great time.

The Delicious Live Pasta Bar was a hit!

And of course we couldn't resist the yummy Texas Sheet Cake.

Our guests participated in a By Design "Scavenger Hunt" complete with odd facts about each of the BDI ladies. They had to figure out which one of us could ride a unicycle, played high school football and rode her bike across America as a child and many more interesting facts....

For fun (and lots of entertainment) we set up a "photo-booth," complete with all kinds of hilarious costumes!

We always have a great time hanging out with our friends from GHBA!

GHBA Remodelors Council - Sand Castle Competition

This year marked 25 years of Sand Sculpting on Galveston's East Beach! Every summer groups from all over Texas gather together to spend the weekend at the beach and compete to build the best Sand Castle in their category.

Hosted by AIA (American Institute of Architects), this event is by far one of the most fun things the GHBA Remodelors and Associate Councils do together.

High Point Market - Century Furniture

By Design Interiors' designers and design assistants recently returned from High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina.

Six days of exploring the latest and greatest in furniture design brought them back bursting with inspiration and creativity.

Over the next several weeks we will try to share just a little bit of their amazing experience with you. Let's start with Century Furniture...

The Century showroom in High Point is absolutely amazing, each room has so many "HAVE to see" items, it's kind of like a kid in a candy store really...

The story begins before you even enter the showroom.

Carly was the only one brave enough to taste this one, and reported that it was pretty tasty!

Celebrating Gracious Living

Last week we were privileged to have one of our homeowners host an amazing open house for our friends, clients, vendors and colleagues. Viking Chef Scotty provided an amazingly delicious spread for our guests who were able to tour the home, enjoy some fine wine and Celebrate Gracious Living.

Cindy Aplanalp of By Design Interiors, Inc. was the designer on this entire project. After the homeowners were in limbo for over 7 months because their original builder was removed from the project, they met Cindy who introduced them to William Shaw and Associates. Together they were able to complete this exquisite home. With seven amazing bathrooms, three kitchens, a guest house, and chilled wine grotto, this home truly is a work of art - thanks to the many vendors and craftspeople who contributed - and we sure enjoyed showing off how it all came together.

"This particular client found lauded designer, Cindy Aplanalp on the ASID website (asid.org) and was intrigued by her master bath renovation that won the 2009 Houston's Best Award (formerly the Prism Award).

Almost everything about this bathroom was transformed from an outdated, almost unusable space to a stylish bathroom retreat. "This couple was very well travleled and had been captured by the style of Indonesia," Cindy says. "For a designer, this is the absolute best place to start a design, in the 'feeling' realm."

Cindy, along with her team (Contractor Breck Powers, By Design Interiors' design staff Amber Reddoch and Erika Barczak, Faux Finisher Laurie Lopez and Kathy Johnson from Bath and Kitchen Showplace), had a large space to work with and were able to create a space that not only resembled the client's Indonesian retreats, but functions extremely well.

The Reality of a Remodel

In remodel, as in life, things don't always go as planned (surprised?). In the past few weeks By Design Interiors has been challenged by a recent remodel project that just isn't cooperating. Although, specifications have been made, orders placed and products delivered, the project has been one struggle after another. It is in these types of project the importance of the designer role can be seen the most.

If you are planning a remodel, remember that things happen! But that's what your designer is here for.

Imagine you are in the middle of a Master Suite remodel, naturally you would expect to see a beautiful space evolve before your eyes, which includes product being ordered and delivered on time and in pristine condition. Unfortunately, this world is not full of perfect situations. The wood floor finish may be halfway usable and the toilet may arrive cracked and un-installable...and that is just the beginning.

We can't perform miracles, but we can come to the rescue and you can be confident that your designer will be your advocate to insure that these issues and more will be addressed and fixed in a timely manner. You can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that your project will come together beautifully.

The journey is never perfect, but destination can be!

At Home for the Holidays...with Design Assistant Carly Frels

At Carly's house, Christmas decorating is really more of a month long activity than a one day event. She loves to think of new ideas and change things around as they come!

Each year, in keeping with the original theme, Carly adds a new element to the tree. The tree becomes more beautiful and unique with each year. This Christmas she incorporated peacock ornaments as well as peacock feathers. These additions provide a magnificent color to her already stunning tree!

At Home for the Holidays with the By Design Staff...Erika Barczak

Erika is a design assistant, originally from Michigan. Normally used to a white Christmas filled with snow and and the flicker of a warm fire, however Texas is pretty different during this time of the year. Erika is living with her sister and a full household here in Houston and wanted to share with us some of the holiday traditions that make her (and everyone else) feel at home.

Growing up, Erika's parents bought each child their own tree. Each sibling had a different theme for their tree, Erika's was Angels and her sister's was Santas. The idea was that by the time each child left home they would have enough ornaments for a tree of their own. In keeping with the tradition Erika's sister puts up the Santa tree every year, and this year Erika joined in on the decorating.

Even a Santa hat on top!

Erika's sister has also started a new tradition with her son and Erika's nephew, Brenner.

During the Christmas season, this has become a new activity for children and parents. The elf is Santa's helper and reports back to Santa on who's being naughty and who's being nice. Everyday you place the elf somewhere else in your home, as if he has come back from the North Pole.

Brenner is only 2 years old and knows to get up and look for his elf every morning. Each child gets to name their elf and can register them online.

One more thing... the children can't touch the elf, because it may take their Christmas magic away.

Cindy Aplananlp and her assistant Erika Barczak have done it again! Another home transformed into a Winter Oasis.

This stunning table setting is created by layering Holiday colored chargers with China you may already have. By using different tones of red and gold, interest is created without being overbearing. It almost looks too pretty eat off of!

Simplicity at it's best. The table is the star of the room here! Christmas garland and flowers were added to the sconces, to create this inviting dinning room.

Beary Merry Christmas! A touch of whimsy can go a long way. Bring back childhood memories by adding Christmas Bears, to your garland.

Last but not least... the TREE! By combining traditional ornaments, ribbon, pine cones and berries, this Christmas tree comes to life. What a wonderful backdrop for all the joy and celebrations of the season.

Peggy Fuller - Featured in Texas Home & Living

Owner and Lead Designer at By Design Interiors, Inc. is the featured designer in the fall issue of Texas Home and Living. Peggy talks with TH&L about the Houston design culture, her design philosophy and the talented design team at By Design Interiors.

In the interview with TH&L Peggy credits her parents as mentors in her design profession, stating, "they instilled in me a sense of 'anything is possible' that continues to influence my design today." Their influence helped Peggy define her design philosophy; "to expand and stretch my clients' comfort level. People tend to select the familiar, what they are exposed to repeatedly by the media and retail stores. I think a design project should take a client on a journey full of adventures and discoveries, collecting treasures along the way."

Peggy brags on her By Design Interiors Team who "contribute a wealth of personal experience and knowledge to every By Design Interiors Project." With over 20 years experience in the design industry Peggy states: "Interior design is my passion. Houston's Best - Award Winning Design Firm!

September 18, 2010 - In an award ceremony at the House of Blues, By Design Interiors, Inc. swept the floor in the area of “Private Residence Interior Design,” being deemed “Houston’s Best” in five categories.

The Greater Houston Builders Association’s prestigious “Houston’s Best” Awards have been recognizing excellence and superior achievement in the home building industry for more than 30 years. Formally the PRISM Awards, Houston’s Best recognizes builders, remodelors, design and sales professionals and the categories of People, Product, and Promotion.

Peggy Fuller, owner and lead designer at By Design Interiors was presented the award for her beautiful design in a formal living room located in the Cypress area. Peggy incorporated many luxury pieces in order to provide a truly unique and sophisticated space.

Cindy Aplanalp, designer at By Design Interiors received the award for a home in the Champion Forest area. Her winning rooms included the Family Room, Dining Room and Master Bedroom. This fabulous home truly broke the mold; as Cindy and the home-owner worked together in order to bring a modern-contemporary design into a home that was built with many traditional features.

Peggy and Cindy also took home the award for their Master Bathroom Remodel - a spectacular space that included all the amenities of a luxury bathroom.

The night was quite the celebration complete with award ceremony, dinner and dancing (to an 80's cover-band at that). We had a lot of fun celebrating with our GHBA friends!

Exciting Changes in the Studio!

A few weeks ago we said goodbye to our dear friend and co-worker Katie, who is planning a wedding and a move. This week, we are sad to say goodbye to another great friend and co-worker, Kimberly Hanks. Kimberly has been a valued designer with By Design Interiors, she has recently accepted an offer to rep for Thorntree here in Houston. Although we are sad to see her leave the studio, she will continue to be around as our rep, helping us with all our projects and bringing us yummy breakfast when she comes to our vendor meetings.

Goodbye Katie!

Last week we were saddened to say goodbye to Katie Lewis, Design Assistant to Peggy Fuller. She has an exciting road ahead of her as she prepares for marriage and a big move to Oklahoma. The wedding is in November and she is going to take this time to enjoy her last few months with her family, and prepare for the wedding, the marriage and the move.

Katie added great value to By Design Interiors, with her assistance to Peggy Fuller, her teamwork in the office and her joyful spirit.

HomeAid Houston is an organization that Peggy and the rest of the staff at By Design Interiors strongly believe in and have the privilege to partner with through GHBA. We are currently working on "Project Independence" for Homeless Veteran Women. We are in the process of remodeling 7 bathrooms and decorating 5 "apartment" rooms for these homeless women. We are so excited to give back to these women who have faithfully and bravely served our country.

Tuesday night some of the By Design Ladies had the privilege of joining HomeAid Houston in selling raffle tickets for their annual fundraiser at the Astro's vs. Mets game.

HomeAid Houston, is a charitable non-profit organization sponsored by the Greater Houston Builders Association that identifies long term, stable homeless care providers who need additional capacity and pairs them with GHBA builders, vendors and suppliers who donate their time, materials and labor to help build transitional homeless shelters.

As their annual fundraiser they are raffling off this AMAZING Playhouse Dugout, complete with A/C, Beverage center, 32" TV, DVD Player, Wii Station, official Astro's dugout bench...needless to say, we ALL bought tickets and are crossing our fingers!

Pick of the Week: Habersham Home

This "pick of the week" comes from a company with not only GREAT products but a wonderful story: - Habersham.

1969 in Clarksville Northern Georgia, Joyce Eddy, was provided the opportunity to start her very own antique shop. Situated over an old laundromat, it was not the most glamorous shop as Joyce toiled to make her one-of a kind creations.

Cast-off cigar boxes were made in to purses, and rejected wooden spools became candle holders and towel bars. Her unique works of art began to make quite a stir. Her family became involved as the business grew and then Joyce enlisted the help of talented local artisans in her area.

As a woman who places tremendous importance in the quality of her designs and expert craftsmanship, she was able to design a factory that mimicked the time-honored traditions of the wood-workers of old. Her artisans hand-finish each piece individually, signing and dating every work of art, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Habersham is now a leader in high-end American-style furniture throughout the United States; it is a testament to what hard work, ingenuity, and a woman's determination can achieve. We love this story and are so glad that we have had the opportunity to share it with you.

Design Everlasting - A New Spin on Green Design

Throughout the past decade, creating an environmentally responsible space has become incredibly important in the world of remodel and design. Everyday new 'green' products, technology, and building methods are introduced: recycled tiles, water retention systems etc...However, simply filling a home with 'green' technology might not always be the greenest solution.
This weeks, "pick of the week" is not really a specific product, but rather "green design."

Designing and/or remodeling your home in such a way that it will require the fewest updates over time, is surprisingly green. One of the most important aspects to creating such a lasting space is to ensure that it 'lives' well. A space may be beautiful and filled with all of the bells and whistles of environmentally friendly technology, however, if it does not live and function well, the design fails.

Designers can create a space for your home that will last as long as you are in your home. When the space is fully functioning and meets all the needs of the user, the necessity for constant changes or updates ceases. Thus, less change is less costly and produces less waste over a lifetime which results in a successful green remodel.

Interior design and remodeling go well beyond how a space looks; combining the two concepts of function and living well, gathered from a knowledgeable designer and skillful remodelor, creates a perfect space without the need for constant updates. The end result in not only a creative and functioning home, but a 'green' lifestyle built-in to your newly designed space.

Pick of the Week: Innovations

We love that new, better, more durable, and more stylish wall-coverings are being embraced again by home owners and commercial owners alike. Innovations Wallcoverings is just one of the amazing contributors helping to make this change happen. Like their name says, their wallpapers are truly innovative.

The Metalessence Collection is a good example of how the company is expanding the limits of wall-coverings. New and more interesting materials are being used to create these color schemes and terrific looks. Cork, bamboo and other natural products are being used in ways that were not even thought of ten years ago. Lighting Design in Florida!

Pick of the Week: Lutron

Trip to Dallas Market!

Last weekend was the Dallas Home and Gifts Market and Designer, Cindy Aplanalp, her assistant, Erika and By Design intern, Brittany made the trip to check out the showrooms. While there, they captured some great photos and shared some of their favorites with us.

It was evident that one of their favorite showrooms was Global Views. Not only are they constantly introducing unique items, their displays are always so incredibly interesting.

Their ingenious was of 'massing' items, create such unique 3-dimensional visual effects! Massing is where you use a large number of items or several large items to accessorize a space.

These photos are great examples of 'massing.'

This showroom also had the brightest, livliest colors; everything is always so uplifting and happy.

Erika, a diver, particularly enjoyed these new items:

YES! Those are divers diving down the wall.
There is also a very unique sculpture of a diver diving through hoops.

Although they loved Global views, there were plenty of other showrooms to visit.

Palecek is another favorite: their products are mare from natural items and retain their unique properties.

These pillows are made out of 100% natural renewable resources, and are really quite beautiful.

And we LOVE these amazing glass bowls.

Dallas Market offers some amazing showrooms and we always enjoy the experience, however, you occasionally come across a few things you just aren't so sure about....

Yes! You are seeing correctly, these are STUFFED SQUIRRELS! And this was not the only one, they were selling for $400-$600 and they mimicked all walks of life, including motorcycle riding squirrels!

You never know what you're going to see, but it's always an amazing experience!

Diamonds Are A Designer's Best Friend:

Monday Pick of the Week...Diamond Head Tack.

As we have said so many times before, we believe that "beauty is in the details." Recently we have come across a new and unique little "detail" that would go perfectly with some of our projects: Diamond Head Tack. These "diamond" and stone nail heads create just the right wow factor needed to jazz up otherwise ordinary furniture pieces. has Endorsed by Kelli Ellis, designer to the stars Diamond Head Tack is our pick of the week!

Sometimes adding just the right touch to a design scheme can be a complicated hassle, but not so with these nail heads. With just a few steps you can revive a boring piece of furniture, adorning it with a new interesting style.

Use them to accentuate the lines of furniture pieces

Trace the borders of your Headboard to give it some sparkle

They can even be used in traditional settings.

One of the really wonderful things about Diamond Head Tack is the versatility that they offer. With such a wide range of colors and appealing choices, you can update or embellish almost everything. They can also be used on upholstered case-good pieces, affording a really amazing look.

For example, the below project is a great use for this product on a case-good piece. It is not completed yet, but we are sure that it will look fabulous when it is done. The designer for this soon to be TV cabinet is Stephen Pollack.

The innovative use of materials is always fascinating to those of us in the design field. We love to learn from the genius of others, and we think this design by Mr. Pollack is wonderfully creative.

Splashing Summer Bathroom Design

The hot summer days are upon us here in Texas, and everyone is looking for a way to escape the heat. The answer may be a relaxing, cool bathroom, a place that you can really take refuge on a hot summer day. Allow us to show you some spaces that our designers have created specifically for blissfully cool retreats.

It may be hot outside, but this bathroom will remain perfectly tranquil inside due to the cool and soothing color tones found in this space - as well as all the reflective surfaces, which always remain cool to the touch.

Likewise, the icy blue mosaics in this bathroom full of white and gray Cararra marble lends itself to cooling down the summer temperatures.

One place that is really great for master bathroom inspiration is The Bath and Kitchen Showplace. We recently visited them and we loved what we saw.

You could design a whole bathroom around one of these vessel sinks. They are fantastic.

Setting the Stage

At By Design Interiors, Inc. we have some pretty phenomenal projects; homes that are truly magazine and award worthy. Yesterday, a favorite projects of ours was photographed by Brad Carr who does sensational interior photography. Designer, Cindy Aplanalp and her assistants, Amber and Erika, put so much time and talent in to this home and it is simply incredible.

However, before a home can be photographed a lot of prep happens -- it has to be staged.

(accessories to be used to "set the stage")

Staging a home for a photo shoot is no easy task and can take several days; cleaning, arranging furniture and accessories and adding the final, just-perfect touches, such as fresh flowers so the photographer can create beautiful images.

Being a former collegiate diver, Cindy's assistant Erika was voted the "book arranger." She climbed up and down that 15' ladder for 2-1/2 hours arranging the books and making sure they were perfectly lined up. They were praying the entire time that she wouldn't fall!

With a few more final touches, this space is going to be perfect!

*Cindy's tip: I suggested to the client that she turn all of her books around so that the paper is facing out. This gave the bookshelf a much more unified look while using the hundreds of books she already owned!

This shot of the master bedroom getting staged had us very excited for the photo shoot. Added artwork and fresh flowers will make this space incredibly beautiful!

Fabric Highlight

Fabrics are one of the main mediums through which designers bring color, life, texture, vibrancy, mood, emotion, and depth into a space. An entire room can be designed around the perfect fabric, directly influencing or evoking a feeling in the room.

Light yellow or golden tones are happy and make any space upbeat and lively. These beautiful fabrics are from Kravet/Lee Jofa - a wonderful fourth-generation company founded in 1918 with the sole intention of bringing luxury, traditional and transitional fabrics to the design market. These fabrics are truly the height of luxury, with a wonderful texture that is not only lovely to look at but feels wonderful as well.

There is a psychology of color that is helpful when choosing the proper fabrics to enhance a desired feel. Blues and aquas add a tranquil relaxing vibe to your space. Cool colors such as blues, greens, and purples slow and cool things down, helping to bring a quiet and soothing atmosphere into a room.

This season is all about light and airy, open and bright spaces. Sunlight has a physiological effect on people; the more sunlight people are exposed to the happier they become. People are opting for more hopeful happy homes by bringing in bright fabrics that put them in an optimistic frame of mind.

Warm grays are also very trendy right now, but these are not the cold stark grays of the past. More recent grays are becoming extremely well loved as they provide a different, fresh look for those people who love the unique. However, this trend has caught on fast and coordinates very well with many natural products (stone and tile) that it won't be unique for long. It will however continue to be a refreshing design theme

Vivid colors, like this pink, add fun and happiness to a room as well. Additionally, they create motion and speed, in the fabric. This will not be a quiet room as your eye will buzz around trying to land on the next punch of color in the space.

How to Build a Sandcastle...AIA Sandcastle Event 2010:

We are sorry we missed our Monday "Pick of the Week" this week, we have been getting caught up from an amazing weekend down on Galveston Island.

The AIA Sandcastle Event is the largest productions that Galveston puts on all year. The registered entrants get down the the beach as early as 7:00 or so in the morning, hauling coolers and grills to feed their crews for the day. Tent upon tent is set by the different participants and they stretch along the beach as far as you can see. The public begins to arrive early too, in order to see the whole sandcastle building process. This was a massive event, fun and busy.

Our sandcastle, registered under the GHBA, was entered under the category of "Most Hilarious" and featured a cowboy sleeping to "Save Texas Energy." Please enjoy the pictures of how it came together (and of how our By Design Interiors ladies enjoyed dressing up for the event!)

They had to build the wooden frames first and then shovel that big mound of dirt into the framing, constantly wetting it down with ocean water, so that it would all pack tightly together. There was a bucket brigade as well as a whole pumping system with hoses bring water up out of the gulf.

This was the area where we were going to write our slogan...then we moved on to building and carving the sleeping cowboy.

The By Design Interiors women decided to dress up for the event - costumes included fake mustaches, water guns, cowboy hats, and some authentic holsters that once belonged to Cindy's grandfather.

May We Never Forget...

As everybody knows, Memorial Day is this weekend! Most of us have marked our calendars and are desperately looking forward to an extra day off of work! We've got plans to grill out and lay out and it goes without saying the whole nation is demanding that the weather be perfect.

Families will drive long distances to find the right camping spot, or to visit relatives. Refrigerators are stocked...and not with veggie burgers either...this day calls for the real thing! Everybody is busy; our lives are humming with the expectation of a wonderful holiday weekend.

However, in the midst of the gatherings and celebrations, please take time to remember why we celebrate.

"I have always been very patriotic. I'm the kind of girl that sings along to the national anthem at the baseball field. I hold my hand over my heart - the whole nine yards. I am not the kind to let any form of military holiday go by without remembering why we celebrate. I've always been like this; my parents raised me right. However, it did become just something I did, who I was, until my sophomore year of college. This was first time that I began to understand the depth, the huge sacrifice, our military men and women, along with their families and friends, make for our country on a daily basis. March 5, 2007 I lost a friend, Private First Class Cory Kosters. Cory's jeep ran over an IED in Iraq. Another friend, Zach Ensly, was taken from us shortly thereafter. These things will change the way you view these holidays. I am so PROUD of our troops and so THANKFUL for their service!" ~ Katie Lewis, By Design Interiors.

Journey Through History for Great Design...

Great design is not just what is taking place in the moment; it isn't confined by modern day trends. Great design is part and parcel of what makes each of us - our likes and dislikes, comfort levels, ideas, beliefs and history that defines us and our style.

Whether we know it or not, history has enhanced the world of interior design. Don't worry, this isn't going to be some boring history lesson; it is actually very interesting!

Hickory Chair Designer, Thomas O'brien (above and center), was inspired by this ancient Greco-Roman piece (below left.) See how he translated its lines into his new stool.

The design then extended to this Kilsmos Chair - which is a very hot trend in today's market but originated from the Ancient Greeks.

Studying history of design from old images and textbooks can be dry and,

let's face it...BORING!

However, visiting the ancient grounds and experiencing the architecture (sophisticated not only for its time, but impressive to this day), can revitalize the world of design!

Recently, Chelsea, one of our staff members, was able to visit such a place of enormous impact - Israel. This war torn region has suffered through ages of turmoil; it has played a role in such a unique, ancient, and interesting, and violent past. It has cradled the hopes and beliefs of millions around the world. In addition it possesses some of the most extravagant, ancient and unique cities that have ever been built.

Please enjoy a few pictures of her experiences. This isn't a true departure from interior design, just an extension of what can influence us all.

This ancient bath resembles some of our formed hot tubs and spas of today!!!!

Back in ancient times community bathing centers were extremely common, but in the palaces and wealthier homes they were privileged to have private residential bathing. Note the design work on the wall! A precursor to our fauxed walls and fancy wall-coverings!

Paved walk-ways and columns have also been used in design throughout history. The scale of everything was massive. Imagine being the builder on a project of this size, without the machines and tools we have today!

Steam room anyone? Here's your early sauna! (a.k.a. cauldera) Notice the hole at the top of the room, this is where the heat would escape.

Setting Sail - Cruise Party!!!!!

The By Design Interiors ladies enjoyed a night at the Houston Design Resource Center, as this was the night of the annual Cruise Party!

Passports were handed out to be stamped at the different "ports of call." In one enchanted evening the party-goers travelled to France and Italy, Mexico and Istanbul, Los Angelos and New York - among other places.

Of course, the different ports of call were the different showrooms located at the Design Resource Center. Each showroom was dressed to impress - serving chilled drinks and delicious food!

The idea was for people to visit each of the different showrooms (25 in total), but hardly anyone accomplished this as they had stuffed themselves with different foods, preferring to lazily make their way from showroom to showroom at a leisurely and relaxing pace.

That was what the By Design staff did!

Although they did start off with great intentions to see everything, they ended up in the center of the party!

Monday Pick of the Week - NDI!!!

Design Tip:
This is an easy, quick trick! Adding greenery or florals will freshen up any space, giving it new life and vitality. NDI's product's are perfect for doing this!

We love NDI's floral arrangements because of the beautiful and natural looking designs that they offer, but also because of the QUALITY!

Some of their flowers look and feel so real that you won't believe us when we tell you that they're fake!

These pictures don't even come close to doing NDI justice but they are wonderful just the same!

The New Room...A Rooftop View!

In cities where space is limited and everything is growing upward, the skyline is changing. Twinkling with candles or glowing with soft multi-colored lights, these buildings are now emitting light and life from their very rooftops as more and more people and companies are expanding their spaces out-of-doors and to their roofs!

This is a hot new trend especially in the hospitality and restaurant industries!

People are enjoying the open-air dining and just the overall uniqueness of these rooftop experiences. It is something different - a break from the ordinary.

Shells are also very in right now! We saw tons of them at Market!

These outdoor spaces are truly an intersection of architecture and great interior/exterior design!

It seems as though the two were designed to go together, the building and the rooftop accessorized space, although many projects aren't designed that way. When designing the remodeled exterior space, there is a great respect and concern for the architecture, which will somewhat dictate the lines of the furniture and accessories appropraite for these exterior spaces.

Good News!!!!!! These fabulous outdoor rooms are not just reserved for swanky rooftop eateries and luxurious resorts! This idea can be incorporated into your very own rooftop oasis!

We love this!!!
